Gordon Lightfoot has always been a favorite of mine since i was a child. He was my mothers favorite aswell. She would go see him every year on her birthday at Massy Hall in Toronto.
I never went with them but i was always excited when that time of year rolled around, we all were.
I didn’t really understand what concerts were all about when i was small so i thought she knew him. For the longest time i thought my Mum and him were great friends! i’m sure i bragged about it to what little friends i had.
He was always a rebel figure to me though, he always seemed to have run-ins with the law and from what i understand had an uncontrolable heroin addiction for years and had a long affair with Cathy Smith the chick who is famous for killing John Belushi by injecting him with a whack of speed balls (cocaine and heroin) Drug abuse has always seemed romantic to me.
My grade 4 music teacher Ms. Brown loved him too. She always talked about him as being this wild folk singer living by his own rules, flying around the city on drugs dodging the law for thousands of dollars in unpaid parking tickets! Of course she used to play “man eater” by Hall N’ Oats over and over again in class. I was into it but later found out she was going through a terrible divorce and i guess took comfort in the idea of men being eatin alive by ravinous women.
Annnyway, i’m not sure if any of these rumors were true about Gordon but i didn’t care the badder he looked the cooler i thought he was!
All badassness aside though, i always loved the sound of his voice. it still gets to me, i feel like i know the old man.
When i discovered the “two Tones” i was over joyed!
